Ines Valdez paints slowly and talks about it quickly. For two hours her Hackney Wick studio is open to ten of us: work finished, work abandoned, and the three canvases she is still arguing with before her autumn show travels to Lisbon.

Studio visits are the club at its best — one member deep in their work, a small room of people who ask good questions. Coffee is strong, seating is paint-splattered, and nothing is for sale.
